It all started with a glass of Romanée-Conti 1985. As they drank, Shin Kibayashi (53) and his sister Yuko (59) played around with the idea of creating a character who would personify the wine. Bottle by bottle, this game led to The Drops of God a 44-volume hit series of manga comics that takes the reader on an exploration of the world’s greatest wines. Written jointly by the pair, who used the pseudonym Tadashi Agi, and illustrated by Shū Okimoto, the series recounts the adventures of Shizuku and Issei on their quest for an extraordinary legacy: the most precious collection of wines in the world!
Over and above the story itself, Shin and Yuko Kibayashi took great pleasure in shaping their characters according to their own interpretation of a particular wine. “Enthusiastic and friendly, Shizuku represents a Bordeaux. And since we wanted a contrasting partner, we modelled Issei on Burgundy wines. He is more complex”, explains Yuko Kibayashi. If the same process were applied to the siblings, a wine expressing passion would certainly be called for. Although they each have their own personal wine collection, they also jointly rent an apartment solely to store their 3,000 bottles: “Even the bathtub is full!”.
